What God promised Israel would have sounded astonishing. The Temple was not complete, the walls were not erected, and Jerusalem was not functioning as a major city. Yet these large promises by God might have appeared impossible. I will unpack this passage with three questions. First question: What did God promise? Second question: When did it/will it happen? Some have argued that all these things find their fulfillment in the millennium. During that Messianic age, they say, Israel will dominate the world and these will be fulfilled during that time. The problem with this interpretation is fourfold. Third question: What does it mean to us? 1. The same God jealous for them is jealous for us. 2. As recipients of the prophetic blessings, what do you most prize in this world? 3. Do we live in such a way that people ask us about the Lord?
