Membership vow #2: Do you believe the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the written Word of God, the only perfect rule of faith and practice? * Breathed out by God * See 1Thess 2:13, 1Tim 5:18, 2Pe 1:20-21 * Many will & can not receive them (Jn 10:26-27, 1Jn 4:6) * God gives us birth 'by the word of truth' (Jam 1:18); feeds & makes us grow by 'the sincere milk of the word' (1Pe 2:2). Scriptures: God-breathed & so profitable
a. Doctrine We're transformed by renewing of our minds, Rom 12:1 b. Reproof He'll convict world of sin, Jn 16:8 c. Correction Heal broken bones & repair torn down walls d. Instruction in righteousness Scriptures can change us, cf 2Tim 4:2
Sufficiency of Scripture: everything we need to know for every good work
Creed/confession/catechism 'Scripture is to be its own interpreter...nothing can interpret Scripture but Scripture'(T Watson). Goal of any creed/confession/catechism is to give true meaning of Scripture by Scripture alone - may never be made the rule. Synods & councils may & have erred, & so must not be made rule of faith or practice, but used as helps.
Conclusion Many insist that Scripture as the word of God is the only perfect rule of faith. But what about practice? 'We should set the Word of God always before us like a rule, and believe nothing but that which it teaches, love nothing but that which it prescribes, hate nothing but that which it forbids, do nothing but that which it commands'(H Smith)
