Theme: Christ uses tragedies to point people to the hope repentance brings. In vv. 1-2, & 4, Jesus addresses two separate tragedies. He dispels the notion that these tragedies happened because the people involved were worse sinners than others. When tragedies occur, we must rest in God's sovereignty. In vv. 3 & 5, Jesus gives hope in tragedies. He stresses the importance and absolute necessity of repentance. We need to point people to the hope found in Christ. God is gracious and invites us to see tragedy as a call to repent. In vv. 6-9, Jesus gives the parable of greatest tragedy. We learn from this that we cannot take God's patience for granted. Now is the time to repent and believe the gospel.
