Aim: To faithfully and courageously fight evil—as the church of Christ.
Doctrine: It is always good for the church to get God's plan before intentionally fighting evil; otherwise, we will flail about, accomplishing nothing, and will become discouraged.
Exegesis: A sound approach for the church's fighting of evil: first, get the facts, and unite around God's truth (vv. 1-11); then, seek (specific) justice, but be prepared for rejection (vv. 12-17); finally, fully involve the Lord, and inquire after His direction (v. 18).
Further application: Why fighting evil is actually good for the church: because we imitate Jesus when we do so, and it honors God and glorifies His holy name.
Key verse: v. 18 ''Then the children of Israel arose and went up to the house of God. They said, 'Which of us shall go up first to battle against the children of Benjamin?' The LORD said, 'Judah first!'''
