"Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." —2 Timothy 2:19
As it was in Timothy's day so it is in ours. Dark days lie ahead for the church of Christ in this country. On every level this nation is becoming more open in its oppostion to God, His law, and His people. The machinery for waging war on the saints is already up and running. The day is coming when we will have to face what the Christians in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia faced...and what Christians in China and Islamic countries have to face even now.
Persecution has a way of separating true believers from the counterfeit. Christ said in the parable of the sower that there were those who received the Word of God with joy. But afterwards, when persecution arises because of the Word, they are offended and walk away from their profession of faith.
That's what Paul was writing to Timothy about as he was facing this very thing. Times like this are frightening times, just as they were for Timothy. When you see those who you thought were Christians abandoning the faith, you wonder who will be next. Where will it all end?
But Paul assures Timothy that all is well. Why? "The foundation of God standeth sure." Here are foundational truths upon which the troubled believer can rest his entire weight.
