The Second Epistle of Peter July 11, 2010 Sermon Lesson 10 2 Peter 2:17-22
We must guard against apostasy.
We must understand the characteristics of false teachers (17) They have no resources for ministry (17a) They are unstable and transient (17a) They are destined for external punishment (17b)
We must recognize their external deeds (18-19) They speak loud, foolish boasts (18a) They entice the wavering with sensual passions of the flesh (18b) They falsely promise freedom while themselves enslaved (19)
We must anticipate their trajectory toward doom (20-22) They escape the defilements of the world through knowledge of Christ (20a) They become entangled in these defilements again and are overcome (20b) Their last state is worse than their first (21) Their "unclean" status never changes (22)
Applications 1. We must guard our own hearts against the temptation to apostatize. 2. We must protect wavering new converts from the influence of false teachers. -Teach them the Word -Live faithful lives before them -Shepherd them constantly 3. We must come to the cross for Christ's forgiveness and healing!
