"The account of Jonah is really the foreshadowing of the free offer of the gospel. It is the 'whosoever will' of the Old Testament. Romans 5:8 says 'but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.' God has come to us in the life, death, and resurrection of His eternal Son Jesus, and if we turn from our sin and flee to Christ, He will forgive our sin and stay His wrath. That's the enduring message of Jonah. Will Nineveh repent? We'll find out in the weeks to come, but their prophet has to get there first and right now he's on the run. What about you this morning? Are you running from God? Friend you can't run from God. His sovereign presence fills every cosmic square inch of the universe. You can't outrun Him, you can't hide from Him, you can't resist Him. Romans 9:19 says 'who can resist His will?' Jonah's gonna learn that the hard way. You might as well surrender and obey before you end up in the belly of a fish too–but that's next week."
