Paul knew that he was to preach the gospel on earth (Acts 20:24), but he desired to be in heaven, for he knew that was very much better. Paul loved Jesus who was in heaven, and he loved the church , that is Jesus' people on earth (2 Corinthinans 5:8).
Paul knew that fruit would result from his work on earth. He knew too that it may be better for him to be in heaven, but it wouldn't be better for others. Paul then was humble and willing to sacrifice his life for the sake of others. Paul wasn't thinking of what he wanted but what others needed (Philippians 2:3-4).
Remaining on for the Philippian believers would result in their progress. Remaining on for the Philippian believers would result in their joy.
