“ Summary, Part 3 ”
HEBREWS 5:8-9: Jesus never disobeyed, but still learned obedience through His suffering (PHILIPPIANS 2:8). He could have spoken His enemies out of existence, but in obedience to His Father, He took their wrath, even though He was THEIR Lord! LESSON: Parents, if God the Father deemed it necessary to instruct His sinless Son in the school of suffering to accomplish His formative discipline, how much more necessary is it that you subject your ignorant and sinful children to the suffering required by their training and correction. Children start out disobedient. C. GOD’S DISCIPLINE OF HIS SON WAS PERFECTED FOR THE PURPOSE OF SACRIFICING HIS SON. HEBREWS 5:9: Had Jesus exercised His divine might, He wouldn’t have shown obedience to His Father. Adam’s test was to not eat of the Tree of Knowledge. He failed. ROMANS 5: Jesus’ test was to go to the Cross: He passed, and became salvation for us. Every week at the Lord’s Table, we remember what our sin cost the Father: His perfect Son. We must not lose sight of the fact that the Son acted in perfect obedience to His Father. The doctrine of patripassianism, which has been declared heresy, asserts that the Father experienced the same sufferings as the Son, since both Persons are God.

“ Summary, Part 2 ”
SECOND: The Father loved the Son because He obeyed His Father’s commands (JOHN 15:10). LESSON: It is only right that parents reserve a special love for obedient children (not that they subtract love from disobedient children, but that they gain special joy from obedient ones). THIRD: The Father displayed His love for His Son by showing Him a pattern to follow, and then by praising him for obediently imitating that pattern (JOHN 5:19-20). LESSON: If God the Father displayed His love for His divine, obedient Son by giving Him a divine pattern to follow, certainly sinful, human parents need to show their love for their wayward children by giving them a model to follow by their instruction and example. But aren’t parents sinful as well, even to the point of being a negative influence? The principle remains: parents have a privilege and duty to imitate the Father. Jesus’ mercy is greater than your sin. LESSON: Your work in the discipline of your children is not only a labor of love. It will also be a showcase of the grace and mercy of God. God can use parents to turn the child from wrath to glory. B. GOD’S DISCIPLINE OF HIS SON IS DEMONSTRATED IN HIS TRAINING OF HIS SON. LUKE 2:40, 51-52: Jesus grew in all dimensions.

“ Summary, Part 1 ”
HEBREWS 10:5-9: Christ’s perfect life on earth and crucifixion was the sacrifice God wanted, not the Old Covenant sacrificial system, which was merely part of the law. JOHN 4:34, 6:38: Christ came to earth to do and finish the will of His Father. Last week, we examined Part I of this study: GOD’S CREATION OF MAN SETS THE FRAMEWORK FOR PARENTAL DISCIPLINE. This week we examine Part II: GOD’S DISCIPLINE OF HIS OWN SON PROVIDES A PERFECT PATTERN FOR PARENTAL DISCIPLINE. FIRST: Biblical discipline has two facets: formative and corrective. Both are necessary. Children need instruction and discipline, not just one or the other. SECOND: We must not presume that discipline is inconsistent with love. THIRD: We should note both an obvious distinction and a crucial similarity: the distinction between Jesus and children: Jesus was sinless and did not need discipline. The similarity: Jesus required formative discipline; His humanity demanded this. HEBREWS 11:16: we do not approach a throne of judgment, but one of grace. A. GOD’S DISCIPLINE OF HIS SON IS FOUNDED UPON LOVE FOR HIS SON (JOHN 3:35). FIRST: The Father’s love for the Son is eternal. It has no beginning or end (JOHN 17:24). LESSON: Parents imitate God’s love for Christ by their unfailing love for their children.

“ Summary, Part 4 (final) ”
This is false because it erodes essential distinctions between the two Persons. [Not to mention that at the root of suffering is a lack of sovereignty. Jesus, the human nature, suffered. –IM] LESSON: Seek the Lord’s help to use your instruction and example and your corporate discipline to be a means of saving your children. APPLICATIONS: 1. PARENTS THAT LOVE THEIR CHILDREN WILL DISCIPLINE THEM. PROVERBS 13:24, 3:12: A loving parent does not just let his child go his own ways. 2. PARENTS MUST NOT BE AFRAID OF INFLICTING PAIN IN THE TRAINING OF THEIR CHILDREN. PROVERBS 23:13: the rod will not kill him, especially eternally; 19:18: don’t start when it is too late; 29:15: a sense of limits fosters realism. Eli didn’t inspire the fear of God in his children, and lived long enough to see the results. Today’s humanistic parenting emphasizes reason, but how does one reason with an infant or small child? 3. PARENTS THAT WOULD SEE THEIR CHILDREN BECOME RESPONSIBLE ADULTS WILL PRACTICE BIBLICAL PARENTAL DISCIPLINE. PROVERBS 29:17: even in her unspeakable grief, Mary had to have been given some peace as Jesus hung on the cross; 13:13: no one’s relation to the word is ever neutral: it either judges or edifies them; EPHESIANS 6:1-3: happy children submit to Biblical discipline.
