There is religious slavery, where a government forces its citizens to be a part of a state religion, and if a citizen refuses, or practices a religion unapproved by the state, there are severe punishments.
Then there is spiritual slavery, where a person chooses to live according to ceremonies, rituals, and rules that are thought to make a person acceptable to God; self-righteousness.
Spiritual slavery, including idolatry, can be cultural, or may be a matter of choice by the individual.
The same principles apply to freedom. No one is free if owned by another human.
