For many, the idea of a God who personally knows us completely and who so fills the universe that there is no place where we could escape His presence might be quite frightening. But instead of feeling threatened by such a God the writer of this psalm is not only gratefully ‘gob-smacked’ by how fully God knows him and guides him - no matter where he goes - but is also profoundly comforted by the thought that not even deepest darkness can hide him from the light of God’s presence. Knowing that God is intimately involved in the wonder of our very existence from before we were born until the day we die shows how huge and how precious God’s thoughts are toward us. This is not a God you can take or leave. There is no neutral place to stand before His presence – only that place where we long that He might more fully search our hearts and show us anything within us that might be unworthy of loving and serving such a God.
