Peter keeps reminding the readers of this letter that they need to be reminded of the truth. Everyone needs reminders whether old or young. If we try really hard not to think about bad things, we will be thinking about them a lot. The anecdote is the think about good, wholesome, and true things. We are not to scoff, to laugh with derision. Scoffers will scoff following their own evil desires. Jesus is coming back just as He rose from the grave. God’s word is true. What we are doing now should be what we would want to be doing when Jesus comes back. In order to know how to introduce people to Jesus we have to know Jesus. God’s word tells us that most people will be unaware when Jesus returns, this should not be so for Christians. Followers of Christ should be eager for Christ’s return. God will not only destroy the heavens and the earth, He is going to build a new Heaven and a new Earth. The way to be found spotless, blameless, and at peace with Jesus is to cry out to Him. Peter confirms Paul’s writing as part of the Holy Scriptures. We need to study the Scriptures so that we know God’s voice and not fall for the lies of the enemy. If we are in Christ Jesus, we are secure in our position. Now, we who are in Christ need to be on our guard so that we would not be carried away by the error of lawless people.
