The false apostles have been relentlessly accusing Paul of not being called—not being qualified—to help anyone come to know the living God and to live in accord with His will.
In their eyes, Paul was unqualified to tell people about life and godliness; to show people who God is and how God wants them to live.
Why? b/c he didn't have the proper letters to back up his claim. And b/c he wouldn't support the party line. He wasn't in agreement with their views of God and man and how it is that a person should live before God.
These false apostles had created a money-making; career-building industry out of religion. They were the ones with the special knowledge. They had the answers. And they were impressive. Who was going to argue with them? They had the letters.
They had the an impressive sounding presentation. They seemed to know a lot. They've been to the schools. They were well-connected.
The false apostles were kind. They seemed to care. They understood. These false teachers were very intelligent. Their explanations for things about life and religion made sense.
Who was going to argue with them? Not ordinary people in Corinth. Not garden variety Christians. Who were they to challenge such studied, learned, impressive sounding men?
And so, when Paul was there being openly insulted by these accusers, no one stood to defend him or his simple yet powerful Gospel message of grace in Christ.
Paul's simple response: “You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men;” (3:2).
In other words, the powerful, internal transformation that had taken place inside them, in your hearts, that radically changed them -- that was validation.
