As always the wind represents the Holy Spirit, but what is He doing? We see movement, not just the people coming to see, but the reed is being shaken by the wind. This plant that grows in wetlands is doing something. It isn't just taking up space. There is a purpose for the reed. The reed is moving. Complacency kills, will cause one to lean over and die. But growth comes from use, and growth means life is thriving. There are a few things in the Bible that Christians are compared to, the reed is one of them. While it may not look very glamorous, when healthy the reed is very useful and lives up to it's purpose. They are used in construction, made into instruments, and arrows. Reeds also can be fashioned into pens and baskets. Jesus never wasted any words, He compared John to a reed will He compare us to reeds as well?
