Having the proper balance. This is a common thing that many people discuss today – the balance between work and play; the balance between obsessing about your health and having no cares or concerns at all. Some of the issues related to balance are worth our attention, but Scripture directs us to focus a balance much more important. In our text from 1 Cor. 10:1-17 Paul shows how receiving the sacraments – baptism and the Lord’s Super – does no guarantee of God’s favor or your own spiritual well-being. Would it be right to dismiss the sacraments as not very important? Far from it. Paul in verses 16 and 17 directs us to consider what a precious gift we receive when we properly receive the Lord’s Supper. Our text also directs us to see the danger of overconfidence and complacence. Do you recognize the spiritual danger that you face? On the other hand, just as God gives to us serious warnings so He also reminds us of His care and protection in the midst of temptation. Doubt is not what God delights in nor pride. What God desires is humility, absolute dependence, and trust in Him. The Lord is good and gracious, but He has no place for men and women who boast in themselves. The proper balance that our text sets forth is a life that is focused on the Lord Jesus Christ, such that we do not tempt Him, complain against Him, or in overconfidence think we have it made. Trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and receive His blessings and benefits. We will look at the first 17 verses of 1 Cor. 10 in three parts: verses 1-11; 12-13; and 14-17.
