Because God orchestrates our lives, we must watch and pray.
So that we might endure the grief that comes through obedience (36-39) - Jesus prayed when He faced the grief associated with obeying His Father (36)
- Jesus commanded His disciples to watch with Him as He faced His grief (37-38)
- Jesus asked the Father to remove the grief (39)
- Jesus submitted to the Father’s plan (39, 42)
So that we might evade the temptation that comes from weakness (40-45) - The disciples were weak physically—sleeping (40, 43, 45)
- The disciples were weak spiritually—taking their rest (45)
- The weak disciples would be tempted to forsake Jesus—and they did (56, 69-75)
So that we might equip ourselves to face the opposition God brings (45-46) - Jesus was being betrayed that very night (45-46)
- The disciples were not ready for the betrayal (47)
- Jesus was ready to face the opposition! (46)
Conclusion - We need to alert to what is happening in and around us (watch). - We need to pray about things that are happening in and around us (pray). - We need to boldly come to Christ concerning the suffering we are experiencing.. - We need to submit to His decision about what will happen— not my will, but Yours be done!
- We have a loving, sovereign God who designs all things for our good!
