We tend to be comfortable with that which is old and familiar. While this might be allowable when it comes to old shoes or sweaters, it does not apply to the old ways of the Pharisees. Jesus comes bringing a new way. He offers a new way of forgiveness, he enters into new relationships (with “sinners”) and invites His people to a new life. The Scribes and the Pharisees oppose Jesus at every turn. They object when Jesus and His disciples don’t follow their traditions. Jesus explains that He is inaugurating a radically new age which is incompatible with the old.
