Summary, Part 3 (final) That Sunday is the Lordâs Day doesnât mean that the other six days are not. 7. THE BLESSINGS RESULTING FROM FORMATIVE DISCIPLINE. a) salvation. PROVERBS 22:6: note that it is a proverb (a general principle) and not a promise. Many parents have leaned on this principle to the eternal destruction of their children. But the Bible also tells of a principle of parentsâ sin falling on the third and fourth generations. b) longer, happier, more productive lives (EPHESIANS 6:1-3). CONCLUDING OBSERVATIONS/APPLICATIONS FOR CHRISTIAN PARENTS: 1. See your home as an incubator under Godâs blessing for raising a godly seed. 2. Know that the most conscientious Christian parents may yet raise a reprobate child. Remember how one comes into the world. 1 SAMUEL 8:3: if our children are to be saved, God must save them. JOHN 1:12-13: Evangelicals need verse 13, not just verse 12. Spurgeon: every generation needs regeneration. Hezekiah had Manasseh, who did get saved. 3. Though no Christian mom or dad is perfect, each should strive under Godâs blessing and according to His word to be the best possible parent. God brings Christian parents to the Bible and to Biblical churches for instruction.

Summary, Part 2 c) a hope for future generations of godly children. We do leave a legacy. What do todayâs Christians think about what the previous generations have left us? We are living on borrowed spiritual capital from our Puritan forbearers. 5. THE CRUCIAL CONTENT OF FORMATIVE DISCIPLINE. a) instruction about God. Calvin: we canât know about God without knowing about ourselves, and we canât do that unsavingly (PROVERBS 9:10). b) instruction that inspires love for God. The details are fine, but what is their goal? What good is all our knowledge of creed and theology if we donât love God? We can have the tinder of facts, but what ignites it and sends a sweet savor to God? c) instruction that incites devotion and obedience to God. The Bible puts love before obedience. Legalism is the latter without the former. Is His command only His delight, or ours as well? Do we say like the Amish boy, âI sitteth, but in my heart, I standethâ? JOHN 21:15-17. Your example encourages your children. What is your example? Look at your children to see it. 6. THE VARIOUS OCCASIONS FOR FORMATIVE DISCIPLINE. DEUTERONOMY 6:6-7: we cannot put into our childrenâs hearts that which is not in our own. Paul in ROMANS: âfrom Him and to Him and through Him are all things.â

Summary, Part 1 Today, we continue with III: GOD PROVIDES PARENTS THE PATTERN FOR CHILD DISCIPLINE IN HIS WORD. 3. THE CRYING NEED FOR FORMATIVE DISCIPLINE. DEUTERONOMY 6:1-9, PSALM 78:1-8. a) because they are sinfully blind from birth and need the light of truth to guide them. We are not born âbasically goodâ (PSALM 51:5, 58:3, PROVERBS 22:15). b) because they are naĂŻve and untaught and therefore susceptible to error/folly. We are not born with innate wisdom (PROVERBS 7:7: âsimpleâ or ânaĂŻveâ means âundiscerningâ). c) because they desperately need to be warned about and equipped to resist the worldâs magnetism and its defilements. We are not born prudent (PROVERBS 22:3: he who is a friend to the world is an enemy of God). d) because they need to identify and to counteract the devilâs deception. We are born children of the devil, and he doesnât play fair. e) because there is a desperate need for a godly seed to carry forth the message of life to the next generation and beyond (PSALM 78:6-7). 4. THE ESSENTIAL MOTIVES URGING FORMATIVE DISCIPLINE. a) glad obedience to Godâs commandment. Weâre incapable of perfect obedience, but we can rejoice in Godâs wisdom. We as Christians know the unhappiness of disobedience. b) an earnest concern for your childrenâs welfare.
