A nervous silence was broken for the wives and children shut up in the city when the enemy began to bash at the gates. They were helpless. Ruthless men, at any moment, would pour into their homes and destroy their good lives permanently. Being manhandled, these dear women and children were shoved from their city and carried away by the enemy, who left their beloved home in a smouldering ruin. Why was this happening to them? Why was it that they had to come under attack in the moment they were least prepared? Why was it that everything they held dear had to be destroyed, their homes and posessions ruined and their families torn apart and violated? There doesn't seem to be an answer that will satisfy all of these questions; or does there? There certainly is an answer to these nagging questions. In this sermon, I have looked at a specific case in which God brought about a specific result from this very tragedy. It is not enough to console oneself with the vague notion that 'God is in control', and to continue in morbid resolve. It is helpful to look at a real incident where God permitted a certain hardship in order that years later, He could bring about a truly delightful result. May God draw your heart up to a new level of worship as you observe His hand at work in the lives of David's wives.
