Before we can even talk about dealing with personal sin, we need to speak about how we are thinking about the objective truth of Christ. Without your heart delighting in Christ, you can give up on the fight with sin. You become like what you worship. It is hard for your heart to be filled with love for Jesus if your mind is filled with stuff that Jesus hates. Don't put sex and money to death, put to death both perverted use of them and also a perverted mind as it craves sex and money as a saviour. Is your passion for Jesus weak because you are stuffing yourself with junk? If you are not seeking Jesus deliberately, you are seeking temporal things. There is no neutral ground. This is a hard challenge! We can't even see we are worshiping ourselves and our perverted desires! Sinful desire must be put to death, not merely to sleep. This is a fight to the death! Killing sinful desire is not killing desire, it is killing a desire for things that are too small to satisfy your soul, in exchange for things that can. What keeps you from setting your heart and mind on Jesus? Interpersonal relationships. Ordinary distractions. I'm so busy loving me that I don't have time to love Jesus. Sins like pornography is linked to a whole way of thinking that has self at the centre. This requires a whole change of thinking--directing everything to Christ and pushing other occupations out. Gratitude toward Jesus is at the core of Christian change.
