Our attitude to Jesus of Nazareth is the litmus test of Christian faith. Many have called themselves 'Christian' but did not hold the doctrine of the person and work of Christ; such are not to be received as Christians. Jesus used the Jews' attacks on him to assert important truth about himself. Their question, 'How long will you keep us in suspense?@ was not honest for it was only intended to stir up trouble, but Jesus used it to declare the eternal security of his people - because they related to him as sheep to the Good Shepherd (unlike his critics). A characteristic a Christian is 'hearing' the voice of the Shepherd, i.e. recognising and responding to it. When they attacked his person with stones and slanders he vehemently asserted his identity as the Son of God. He used arguments from Scripture, and the fact that God was doing his works through him. Peace is not at the price of truth. WE would be wise to reflect on our own attitude to the person and work of Jesus. Do we believe him to be God and man, two natures in one person forever? IS he our only hope in life and in death? Do we have his Spirit? and are we eager to keep his commands? Our attitude to him is our attitude to God, for 'I and the Father are one'.
