June 29th, next Tuesday, is known as the 'Day of the Christian Martyr.' According to church history, it's the date of the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul. It serves as a reminder for us to pray for persecuted believers world-wide. Tertullian noted that "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church." Their example of faith in the face of death has not quenched, but sparked the spread of the gospel throughout church history, holding true even today.
Many are unaware that the 20th Century had by far the highest level of persecution of Christians and the highest number of Christian martyrs in all of history - and the 21st Century is proving to be even worse. This should not surprise us, since Jesus said in John 15, "If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you… If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you…" But it should awaken in us an urgency to prayerfully prepare for spiritual battle by putting on the whole armor of God, and to intercede in prayer for others (Ephesians 6:10-18).
