The cities of refuge in the book of Joshua display God's character as both just and merciful. They would have trained the people of God that the Lord provides a place of refuge for those who are accused and endangered.
They provided safety for those who committed manslaughter or homicide, but there was no place for the outright murderer. This picture, although imperfect, demonstrates that for those who repent of their sins, a place of security can be found in the Lord Jesus but determined sinners will find no refuge from the wrath of God.
In this Bible Study, we draw parallels between the cities of refuge and the ultimate refuge for the people of God. We see how the cities were divinely appointed with a prepared way to enter them. The accused had to enter the city to be safe and had to remain there to be secure. The cities were designed for all, and the accused had to leave the outside world behind. Here is so much that illustrates the believer's perfect refuge in Jesus Christ.
