Many people will go to church tomorrow with the hope of learning how to be more successful in life – career, academics and relationships. While the Bible speaks to these issues, they are much less important than the topic of tomorrow's sermon. Tomorrow we will address the issue of how a sinful person can be right with a holy God.
The answer of Scripture (which Paul states three times in our text) is that we are not justified by our works, but we are justified by faith alone in Christ alone to Whom our guilt was imputed and Whose righteousness is imputed to us.
While this teaching sounds simple and clear, it is neither well understood nor well liked – in Paul's day or in ours. There is no truth more under attack by Satan, who has no problem with religion and morality, but actively opposes grace.
My hope is that each of you will see that this is the clear teaching of Scripture and that you will be able to defend and proclaim this vital truth. Even more our desire is that those who have never received God's righteousness in Christ will believe. Pray for this, please.
