Introduction: We are in Matthew chapter 5 which is the first part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. In the particular section Jesus has been working through the application of the God’s law to God’s people. “You have heard it said. But I say to you.” 7 times Jesus says this. And each time Jesus is making an application not so much to behavior as to the condition and the attitude of the heart. In today’s section Jesus is addressing the Law of God in regards to how we should appropriately respond when someone harms us.
1) Three examples of being harmed - Insults/Reputation - Taking something of value/possessions - Taking our Freedom
2) Our Citizenship is not on earth
3) Citizens are called to reflect the Character of our KING
Conclusion: If our King gives so freely to all who come, can we not give up all that we have so that others might come too? Let us become like our King. Let us repent of our vengeance and let us trust God when He says “vengeance is mine.”
