Last week, we saw how God met with the Israelites at Mount Sinai to enter into a special relationship with them called a covenant. Now beginning in chapter 20, God gives Israel the content of the covenant – the Law - (and by Law, I am referring to the 10 commandments and the rules that follow through chapter 23). This is an exciting and important event in God’s grand plan.
The title of the message is The Giving of the Law. Today I would like to make 3 points about the Law
1) The Purpose of the Law Before we dive in to chapter 20, look back with me at chapter 19. When God was gathering the Israelites together to establish this covenant with them, He said in v.5 - 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. 2) The Content of the Law 3) The Fulfillment of the Law – Romans 3:21-31
The Law was a delight and blessing to Israel because it revealed the character and will of God, but it also proved to be a yoke they could not bear. The Law revealed what God required and it promised that if one could do the Law perfectly, he would have eternal life. But the Law gave no power to enable the person to keep the Law and the Law taught that if one broke the Law, he would be subject to God’s wrath – the Bible calls that the curse of the Law. Jesus lived as a man under the law. He experienced real temptations to break the law, but He resisted every time and obeyed the Law perfectly. On the cross Jesus bore the wrath of God. He bore the curse of the Law.
