In Romans 4:1-8 Paul presents two exhibits from the Old Testament to prove that justification has always been by faith. Exhibit 1: Abraham was justified by faith. Abraham, the father of the Jews, was not justified by works, so his boasting is excluded (vs. 1-2); the Scriptures bear witness--Abraham's faith was counted to him as righteousness (v. 3); if anyone were to be justified by works, then justification would be earned rather than gifted (v. 4); and those who believe rather than work have their faith counted as righteousness by the One who justifies the ungodly (v. 5). Exhibit 2: David sings of the blessings of being justified by faith--who: anyone to whom God counts righteous by faith and not works (v. 6); what results: sins are forgiven (v. 7a), sins are covered (v. 7b), and sins are not counted (v. 8).
