Here is a woman that comes from the darkness of idolatry in a pagan land to a knowledge of the living God. She discovers the Lord's power, sufficiency, goodness, mercy and faithfulness.
Brought to her wits end, she is finding firewood to cook her final meal, presuming she and her son would then die of starvation, having already lost her husband.
As Elijah comes to Zarephath, he commands the woman to bring him water and bread. Humble and compliant, she recognises Elijah and his God, willingly submitting to Elijah's request and demonstrating her readiness to put the Lord first in her life. Despite her desperate situation, she does not express any resentment.
As she expresses concern that her barrel of meal is almost run out, Elijah encourages the woman to 'fear not' and assures her that the barrel will not be depleted. This is an invitation to trust the word of the Lord through Elijah.
This woman responds by trusting the words of Elijah's promise. Do we trust the word of the Lord? She was assured that her life would be taken care of, but we have a greater assurance: eternal life for our souls.
