The theme of Daniel is that the kingdom of God, when attacked by the kingdoms of men and of Antichrist, will not be destroyed, but will triumph, because the two kingdoms are antithetical. This theme we will develop with several goals. To learn basic principles of eschatology. To guard against wrong ideas of the relationship between God’s kingdom and men’s kingdoms. To encourage sanctified, godly living as citizens of God’s kingdom in men’s kingdoms. Daniel: God’s Antithetical, Indestructible, Triumphant Kingdom (1) Babylon’s Temporal Victory Over Judah A. Jerusalem’s Glory Diminished. 1. Our text relates the diminishing of Jerusalem’s glory in the first stage of the Babylonian captivity. 2. Adding to the diminishing of Jerusalem’s glory is that Jehovah permitted it. 3. This diminishing of Jerusalem’s glory caused great misery to faithful believers. B. Babylon’s Idol Honored. 1. The text also indicates that, while Jerusalem appeared defeated, the Kingdom of Antichrist appeared victorious: Nebuchadnezzar honors his god for this victory. 2. Today too, the world appears victorious over the church, and over Jehovah Himself. C. Jehovah’s Purpose Accomplished. 1. In this trampling of His glory and giving it to another, Jehovah was sovereign. What were His purposes? 2. How encouraging this is to us!
