'As Jesus' disciples we get to be about the good work of sharing the word of God with the world.'
If you are anything like me, a statement like this will stir up a mixed response. The idea of sharing the word of God fills many people with a sense of duty, fear, and guilt rather than confidence and joy. The end result of such feelings is a stopping, even a fleeing from the good work. Does that ring true for you as well? Why do we feel this way as followers of Jesus? One reason is found in our passage in Matthew this week. Speaking the word of God can come with a heavy cost. The cost of rejection, even going so far as imprisonment and death - costs suffered by those who spoke God's word throughout history. But God doesn't want his people to stop the good work, and so he calls us who are faithful back. He does so, not with judgment ready but with gentle grace - a grace that is only afforded to us by Jesus.
