John 17:21-23 form one extended petition for those who would believe on Christ through the word of the Apostles. Verse 21 prays for the mystical union of the Church—“that they all may be one.” In verse 22 Jesus states that he has given them the glory that He had been given by the Father—“the Spirit of glory” (I Peter 4:14). In Verse 23 Christ adds another dimension and prays for divine indwelling. How is the Church going to be brought together in one—it will be by the work of the Holy Spirit, the co-Fulfiller of the Great Commission. It is this union with the Godhead through the Spirit that will be a witness to the world by enabling the Christian not only to believe that he is loved by the Father as Jesus is loved, but to live as though he believes it before a sinful world.
