Summary, Part 4 (final) 2. WE BEHOLD THE RESULTING FALLEN SINFULNESS OF EACH HUMAN BEING, which is why the radical change of salvation and sanctification are necessary to change course. 3. WE BEHOLD THE CONSEQUENT NEED OF EACH PERSON AS A FALLEN SINNER FOR THE SALVATION GOD HAS PROVIDED IN CHRIST. God restored His image in His Son.

Summary, Part 3 1 JOHN 3:8: Christ came to destroy the works of Satan. HEBREWS 2:14-15: Christ lived as a man to thwart Satan from his target. ROMANS 5:13: The Fall of the first Adam was countered by the Resurrection of the second Adam. CONCLUDING PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS: 1. WE BEHOLD THE ESSENTIAL CREATED DIGNITY OF EACH HUMAN BEING. a) Whether in the world or in the womb, all persons are the image of God. i) This exposes the evil of abortion, designating it to be murder (see PSALM 51:5). ii) This underscores the necessity of the death penalty for murder (GENESIS 9:6). Murder is a strike at God’s image and thus at God Himself. b) God has created mankind as male and female. With respect to marriage: i) this depicts God’s unity and tri-personality (two becoming one in His covenant; ii) this demonstrates divine self-love; iii) this declares God’s glory; iv) this denounces various common sins: homosexuality as a scandalous distortion of our divine image-bearing status, and of God, in Whose image we are made; unbiblical divorce as undermining the family; and adultery and fornication as overthrowing the proper place of sexual union. c) God has created the nuclear family as essential to the survival of mankind.

Summary, Part 2 LEVITICUS 23:3: the Sabbath is also a holy convocation. C) MARRIAGE AND PROCREATION (extending His image): this ordinance extends His image in His being and in the furthering of God’s work of Creation. B. GOD JUSTLY THREATENED AND EXACTED PUNISHMENT FOR VIOLATION OF HIS FATHERLY RULE. 1) God has the right to punish disobedience and to set rules (depravity is our allergy to His rules). 2) God’s rule is couched in grace, and His threats are not empty. Adam’s consequence was spiritual death. 3) GENESIS 3:14-15: the result of the Fall. Satan was doomed and would take as many with him to his own fate as he could. Eve was punished as a usurper, and great pain was added to the blessing of childbirth; the wife’s desire would not be for her husband as a person, but for his place of authority (see GENESIS 4:7). For Adam, labor and home were cursed. Futility entered his work and home. C. GOD GRACIOUSLY RESTORED HIS FALLEN SON TO HIS FORMER FAVORED STATUS. Adam and Eve died spiritually, but in wrath God remembered mercy, and even put it in His curse (GENESIS 3:15). He issued war between the Godly and the wicked, and promised the restoration of Eve’s seed to His favor. GENESIS 3:20-24: the prefigure of God’s forgiveness. Again, His mercy comes through His judgment.

Summary, Part 1 GENESIS 1:24-2:25. I. GOD’S CREATION OF MAN SETS THE FRAMEWORK FOR PARENTAL DISCIPLINE. A. GOD CREATED MAN AS HIS ROYAL AND REPRESENTATIVE SON. 1. God created Man with a unique identity. Man is the only creature to be created in God’s likeness. Adam was made out of the elements of the earth, but was also given the breath of God. With his office, Adam was to replenish the earth. But he also needed companionship, and so Eve was made directly from him. They became one family. This passage teaches: a) that Man is God’s creation, b) That Man is God’s special creation, c) that Man is the crown of God’s Creation (not even the angels can claim this), and d) that the family is God’s creation, made to fill the earth and subdue it. 2. God endowed Man with special ordinances. Biblical scholars often call these the Creation Ordinances: A) LABOR (imitating His Creation): this helps man imitate God in the Creation. EXODUS 20:8-11, the Fourth Commandment, is about rest AND work. No matter your work, it is an exercise of dominion. B) SABBATH (imitating His rest): GENESIS 2:1-3 is the source text for this ordinance. God made the Sabbath for all mankind, not just for Adam or for the Hebrews.
