We have seen in previous messages that in John 17, Jesus prays three times “that they may be one even as We are One.” The Body of Christ is to be characterized by a unity that reflects the glory of the Trinity. We must have mutual love, mutual knowledge, mutual honor, and mutual delight with each other as a reflection of the relationship of the Persons of the Trinity. Today we will see that Christian unity requires a mutual purpose among the Body of Christ. In opening His heart, Jesus reveals to us the inner-workings of the Family of God. He is saying to us that we are to reflect this in our relationships. This is the glory of the Gospel lived out; the Gospel that transforms us, the power of God which comes and gives us a new heart, which takes out the heart of stone and puts in a heart of flesh, and calls us to take the message to the world, and part of the message is that which is lived out in our relationships. Jesus says twice in the passage that as we are one, the world will know that the Father sent Jesus. This is an amazing promise: that what will authenticate the message of the Gospel is the oneness and unity in the Body of Christ.
