God is on about transforming lives and communities through His Gospel. The book of Philemon give us, as it were, a short ‘case study’ of this transforming power of the Gospel - in changing an individual person: the slave Onesimus; in changing his relationship with his master, Philemon; and in the ripple effect this has in changing both the church community they are a part of and the culture of the world in which they are placed. We affirm the truth that the Gospel is the power to save; do we also believe that the Gospel is the power to transform in an ongoing way? The Gospel not only accomplishes our justification, but also our sanctification, and especially as we experience reconciliation between one another since the Gospel is all about reconciliation.
