The opening verses of the book of Revelation shows that it is not a wholly futuristic view of things to come (as popularly imagined) but a revelation by Christ to John of things that were then now at hand, or to shortly come to pass. These are the same things which, when revealed to Daniel in chapter 12 of his book, are said to be "sealed until the end of time". Christ is now going to usher in these things beginning with the awful destructin of Jerusalem (Dan. 12:1), then the destruction of Rome and on until his kingdom prevails over all the earth and his enemies become his footstool. Jesus' words to John are full of comfort for the elect in the midst of the desolations he brings. We ought never to fear, but to know that all follows the determinate counsel of God. Careless sinners (including formalist Christians) should be warned of the doom that surely awaits them unless they repent.
