The sovereignty of God is the basis for the fact of God’s election of the Jews as a nation and individuals from among the sinful mass of humanity. His choices were made within Himself before the foundation of the world. The Scriptures, as the Word of God and from God, reveal both God’s sovereignty in choosing whom to save as well as man’s responsibility for His sin and to believe to be saved. God saves on the basis of His mercy which is by definition undeserved. God is obligated by His character to be just and not obligated to be merciful and gracious to anyone. Those chosen become known by Him in a personal relationship that is eternal. The means of carrying out the salvation of the elect involve all three Persons of the Godhead. The means for each individual to personally appropriate the salvation provided for all humanity is by faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The Word of God says that He is sovereign in His choosing and man is responsible to choose to believe. These biblical truths are difficult for our human mind to reconcile and yet nonetheless true because God has said both are true.
