What could Paul say to dislodge the Corinthians from trust in human sources of wisdom? He knew that he, and they, had a gracious crucified Christ standing sentinel over all their sin and despair, but they were missing this because they preferred to feel secure within a human framework. God is the builder of the church, Christ its foundation, and the Spirit its presence. Alongside this, all that anyone can do is be a gardener or labourer, and even then, answerable to the Lord for how they do it. So Paul says, 'Take up all that is yours!' Christ has conquered life, death, the present and the future, and is giving it all to you for your progress and joy!
