Paul’s Point in v. 9: It doesn’t matter where we are, what our situation, here or there, we aim to please Christ. Not “gaining acceptance in his eyes” (as one commentator wrote) but pleasing Him because all He has done for us. Paul was not doing this to earn Christ’s presence and forgiveness but wanting to please Him because Christ has purchased forgiveness and assured Paul of his acceptance. Two Motivations 1. Because we will be with Christ 2. Because we will give an account to Christ
THEREFORE 1. That means everything comes into clear focus for believers: we must aim to please Christ! 2. That means every circumstance, condition, situation, predicament, etc. we find ourselves in, we know what we must do: we must aim to please Christ! 3. That means we must brutally ask ourselves this question, for what or for whom are you living? Who are you aiming to please?
