This is an apt illustration of the church in the world mixed with true believers and false professors. Quite often it is these false professors who are the cause of the problems the church has as a people. This shows that even unbelievers can and are drawn into the light of the Gospel for a time. Here the Apostle Peter is speaking of those who were drawn into the light of the Gospel, who at least gave mental agreement to it for a time, but who fell away from it revealing that they had never TRULY believed it. In this, he concludes his description of false teachers. This is part of an ongoing verse by verse study through the epistle of II Peter.
