We cannot be a true Christian unless we pray. Prayer is an expression of faith and recognition of God's existence. Many people will pray at a time of crisis or trouble, but the true Christian will focus upon the needs of the soul.
In Psalm 139, we see David pray to a God who knows our every move. Rather than find this intimidating, the Psalmist takes great reassurance from this. He has a clear and right view of God, recognising the Lord as his Creator and understanding there is no hiding place from him.
As he continues in prayer, David does not see himself as sinless, but sincere. No Christian is without sin in this life. Instead, they are ashamed of sin and delight in God's laws, longing to please Him.
Finally, David is anxious to be right with God. He welcomes God searching his heart, that every sin might be confessed and renounced. He desires to be led 'in the way everlasting' - the pathway that leads to eternal life.
Psalm 139 is an example of how we can approach the Lord for salvation.
