This first sermon in the series considers Matthew's identification of Jesus of Nazareth in terms of His genealogy. Like all the gospel writers, Matthew's concern was to demonstrate unequivocally that Jesus is the promised Messiah and therefore the fulfillment of all the Scripture. With that intention in mind, Matthew opened his account with Jesus' line of descent, showing Him most importantly to be a son of Abraham and David - both identity markers being essential to any man's claim to be the messianic redeemer predicted by the Old Testament. Moreover, recognizing the crucial contribution to messianic prophecy made by Judah's captivity in Babylon, Matthew pointedly partitioned Jesus' genealogy around Abraham, David, and the Babylonian captivity (1:17). From the very outset, Matthew honored his intent to show that Jesus of Nazareth is the fulfillment of the Law, Prophets, and Writings - that He is the Lord's messianic King and the inaugurator of His everlasting kingdom.
