The Savior's conversation with the Samaritan outcast woman is a picture of the proclamation of the gospel to the world languishing in darkness and sin. It is instructive in His manner in which He approaches her and in what He addresses. He does not encourage he to simply reform her life, or to be a better person. He meets her where she is (in both a geographical sense and a spiritual sense). Though He is the sinless and only Begotten Son of God, He engages her with no hint of condescension or haughty pride. Rather, He comes to her with knowledge (of human nature and its sinfulness) and with a winsome declaration of the truth which addressed her particular need. In this we find a picture and pattern of the continuing commission of the church. The gospel message is an ancient message, but this does not mean that the message is no longer relevant or has become obsolete. On the contrary, we ought not be, "…ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
