In our first message of this series we heard that God had 'covered' Adam and Eve with animal skins. By making a sacrifice for them, he covered their guilt and shame, allowing them to live without the full measure of their guilt and shame always before them. But this was only a shadow of things to come, as were the sacrifices made each year in the holy places by the high priests. Such sacrifices could never perfect the conscience of the worshipper. We are desperate and needy for our sin, guilt and shame to be done away with once and for all, but we cannot do this for ourselves. Many of the things we do in our attempts to cleanse our consciences, together with anything else done without faith, are in fact dead works which we need to be cleansed from. From the first sin until now, God has always provided a sacrifice for sin, but only in Christ's once for all sacrifice can our consciences be purified so that we might serve the living God with a true heart, in full assurance of faith and without fear. By the grace of God, there is no longer any other offering we can provide for sin, we can only receive the cup of salvation with thanksgiving and call upon the name of the Lord. I pray we might know this glorious truth in our own lives, not merely in theory, but in the reality and joy of a cleansed and pure conscience.
