Regardless of your assessment, on account of his church and pastor the Gaius of 3 John clearly was a casualty waiting to happen. As you know, Gaius was a disciple of John the Apostle and so held a special place in this pastor’s heart. Thus when John learned that Gaius was being persecuted for righteousness sake; a persecution that arose NOT from the non-believers of the city in which Gaius lived, BUT from Gaius’ pastor and church! The apostle was not about to stand by and say nothing. This epistle represents John’s exhortation to Gaius to remain steadfast and faithful to the Lord when it came to the ministry to which God had called him regardless of what the world, the church, or even his pastor might say.
