In this verse Paul the Apostle directs the Corinthian Christians to make a diligent self-examination to determine whether they have a true and saving faith in Christ or whether they are Christians in name only. This verse is God's command to all of us. The sermon sets forth the truth contained in the text under three headings: 1) Self-examination is the duty of every Christian; 2) The particular thing to be inquired into in regard to self-examination; and 3) The importance of this duty. Little is heard in Christian churches today of self-examination, and largely because of this many are lost in the church while assuming that they are on the way to heaven. The sermon shows that self examination is the friend of true religion, not an enemy. No one will every be a looser for serious self-examination, but many will be lost for the lack of it.
