At the Holy Supper table the Son of God makes a new covenant with us: 1. How old is that new covenant? 2. Why does God make that new covenant? 3. With whom does God make that new covenant?
Questions to think about during the sermon: Point 1: 1. How old was the Old Covenant when it was old and obsolete? How old is the New Covenant? 2. What is special about the New Covenant? When was (is) it renewed? Point 2: 3. What was the first thing that God said to Abram when God made a covenant with him? How did the Israelites celebrate the Passover? Why? What did it symbolize? 4. In the same way … what does our celebration of the Holy Supper urge us to do? Point 3: 5. To what did Luther compare the celebration of the Holy Supper? Why? Obviously we don’t speak in the same way as Luther on this point; but why is his point still important? 6. How can we be sure that Jesus Christ really paid for our sins? Do we receive this gift … as surely as we believe; or … as surely as our faith is genuine? What does the catechism say about this?
