Paul is in Athens, and his spirit is provoked at the idolatry that he sees there. Paul has a missionary mindset, not a tourist mindset, so he is assessing the religious culture and how to preach Christ to them. Paul deconstructs their false idols, hopes and worldviews before he reconstructs that Christ is the only foundation. An idol is anything that provides for us a sense of identity or security. Paul was jealous for the glory of God and provoked to anger at their blasphemy, but also pitied them that their lives were so empty and meaningless without Christ. Only Christ can set us free, so Paul unashamedly preaches the Gospel to them. The Gospel is the only thing that can destroy idols.
