In these three verses, John offers a passionate pastoral plea. His desire is that Christians not love the world, nor the things in the world. He is careful to draw out the reasons and provides a powerful incentive for obedience to his command. John is writing, not only to warn, but to encourage and bring assurance. Loving the world has eternal implications, but loving the Father leads to joy in obedience. This is an important passage for our generation, and forces as to ask, "What do we love."
