Paul is saying here that the building up of the church is done with peace and mutual edification, which is the goal. It was the church that was the great mystery hidden from the Old Testament saints (Ephesians 3:1–12). The church was God's building that Paul was helping to build (I Corinthians 3:9; Ephesians 2:21). Spiritual gifts were to be employed for the edification of the church (I Corinthians 14:5, 12, 26; Ephesians 4:12). Toward that end it is important to make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. God does not want division and spiritual impurity in Christ's body, "But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children" (I Thessalonians 2:7). Love and the appropriate use of spiritual gifts establish peace in the Body of Christ. Paul makes this clear in I Corinthians writing a discussion of confusion in the Church.
