This passage continues to outline the coming of the Holy Spirit and His ministry as the Paraclete (the One who comes alongside as another advocate.) With the departure of Jesus’ physical presence from this world the disciples could easily have been overwhelmed with the task that Jesus had entrusted to them. How could they defend themselves against opposition? How could they convince the world of its unbelief, and of the righteousness that Christ alone displayed and of the judgement and defeat of all evil?
How easy it is for us to think that our faith would be stronger if we could have walked with Jesus on the hills of Galilee! We like the disciples need to be reminded that it is actually better to be alive now after the coming of the Spirit. Without His coming and His great convicting work we could never be brought into all the truth and be made bold to bear witness to Christ in the face of the world’s ongoing rejection of the Father’s revelation.
